Member's Spotlight: Editions Hair & Beauty

Meet Kerrie Pullen, the driving force behind the thriving Editions Hair & Beauty salon in South Cave, East Yorkshire.

Kerrie reached out to us to improve her business operations and financial management. Our journey together involved a detailed analysis to boost sales and a strategy on leadership for her managerial team.

Through our Management to Leadership programme, we've helped the manager evolve, allowing Kerrie more space to concentrate on strategic aspects of the business. Key interventions included refining Kerrie's approach to time management, streamlining team communications, and focusing on the beauty side of the business to increase its turnover.

Our ongoing support aims to solidify her annual strategy, ensuring Editions Hair & Beauty's growth and sustainability.

We asked Kerrie a few questions about her business journey and the personal experiences she's had as an owner. Her insights are as intriguing as they are inspiring, shedding light on the realities and rewards of entrepreneurship in the beauty industry.

The best piece of business advice you've ever received that you'd share with another salon owner

Know your numbers, whether it's keeping track of where every penny is spent within the business or knowing month by month the rate of growth or reduction in turnover and profitability and where that is stemming from. The more you understand the numbers, the more control you have over your business.

If you could go back and change anything or give your younger self some guidance for your business journey, what would it be?

Have more confidence and faith in my abilities . Don't just be another stylist behind a chair who is also trying to manage the business , step out from behind that chair and RUN THE BUSINESS!

Your favourite thing about being a business owner?

Freedom to have a good work/life balance of my own design.

And what do you find most challenging - and how you overcome it?

Staff management, I would say, involves managing their expectations of employment and negotiating around their own work/life balance needs. They are obviously my greatest asset, and I endeavor to keep everyone on board; therein lies the problem: without good staff, the business is worthless.

Someone or another brand or business in the industry who inspires you and why?

I would say one salon that has always impressed me is Melissa Timperley Salons in Manchester. Melissa comes across as being absolutely the figurehead of the salon, with strong branding and a strong presence in all their marketing and promotional materials. The salon has won many awards and has a really clear focus on who they are, and as a salon, what they represent as a brand. Their client journey video on their website, I think, shows that client care is paramount within the business, and seeing that video as a potential client would make me feel as though I would be welcomed and really cared for during my visit.

What do you love about being a Delforge Member, would you recommend us to other salon owners and why?

I love being a Delforge member for many reasons: for not feeling alone anymore—it sure is lonely running a business. Nobody understands quite how it feels to be left with the staff issues, cash flow, and many other issues that keep you awake at night. So, it is amazing to be able to share that load with Valerie, Amy, and also the other members of the group who completely understand as they are in the same position as you. Valerie and Amy have been invaluable to me; they push me when I need pushing, refocus me when I have gone off track, and celebrate all my business successes as much as I do. They make you feel like you can achieve all your goals and give you the tools, encouragement, and support you need to get there. I wouldn't be without them.
